License Renewal

Nordion processes nuclear isotopes to provide products and services used for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease. All nuclear substance processing facilities must meet the Canadian Nuclear and Safety Commission’s (CNSC) safety and security requirements and are regulated under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act. We are licensed by the CNSC to operate a Class 1B nuclear substance processing facility in Ottawa. Nordion plays a vital role the global healthcare supply chain.

On March 15th, 2024, Nordion submitted an application to the CNSC for the renewal of our Class 1B Nuclear Substance Processing Facility Operating License, NSPFOL-11A.01/2025. We are requesting the license be renewed for a 25-year period.

The hearing for our license renewal is expected to take place in Spring 2025.

Nordion has been safely operating our facility at 447 March Rd for over 70 years and producing Cobalt-60 sealed sources since the 1960s. Over that time, Nordion has implemented and continuously improved our facilities, equipment, and programs to protect the health and safety of people and the environment. Since our last license renewal in 2015, a number of improvements have been made to our facility and programs. These improvements are outlined in our official application.
